Sometime in 2002, I went to a local Columbus, Ohio radio station web site.(610 WTVN AM)
I seen on the site where I can register to win several contests. One was an all expense paid trip, for 2, for a week in Munich, Germany and the Oktoberfest. Round trip airline and hotel paid. I thought to myself 'What the heck...I know I am not going to win.' Well, 1 week later, I came home from work and my wife, Mary, asks me if I knew who 'Sterling' was. I told her he is a radio personality...Why?
She said he called and said I won that trip. I said 'NO WAY!!!!' and called the station. They put me right on the air and told me all about it.
A year later... we are off on our first ever flight.
We was a little nervous but everything went off without a hitch. We had to stop in Atlanta, Georgia to change planes, then on to Germany.
After about 10 hours of flying, we arrived at 8AM (2AM EST). We had the whole day after checking in to our hotel (which in Germany was a 5 star hotel).
So we decided to try to walk to the Oktoberfest. Well...we didn't get there. We got lost in the big city of Munich. We managed to find our way back to the hotel and called it a day. We tried it the next day, following our map a bit better and made it.
The review? Well.... I guess we are too Americanized. It was interesting, the German people were wonderful, but the food and aroma of the food did not agree with us.
('Steckerlfisch' trout on a wooden stick roasted over coals....Whole gutted fish on a stick? I don't think so.)
The beer, (Not on a Sunday, ha ha.), was very potent, strong, but good.
We ate at McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Hard Rock Cafe, a pizzaria, and on our last night, a small Italian Resturaunt, which was the best of all. It was very romantic, (Dim lighted, rose in a vase and candle light), and reasonably priced. Every where else tasted diferent than here in the states that we are used to. Even the soda pop.
Everyday we walked about 3 miles to an area of the city called the Marienplatz. We spent the most of our weekdays there shoping and sight seeing. It is the oldest part of Munich which dates to around 1400s. Munich itself was founded in 1158.
The churches and breweries are tremendously old and decked out.
We decided to get gifts for those who asked. Some Cyrus's might not be able to get T-Shirts there. I asked for a XXXL size for one of Mary's family members and was told 'Nine, (no), Only in America' Go figure. Almost everyone in Germany are slim.
Anyways, on our 4th day, we seen actor Will Smith at the premier of Germanys 'Bad Boy's II' movie. That was Mary's highlight. Got a good close up picture.
Our trip home was uneventful with the exception on arriving in Atlanta for the plane switch to Columbus. Eleanor and her grandson, Allen, was there to meet us and have dinner. I really enjoyed the visit. Germany is ok... but family is so much better!!!
I guess that was MY highlight!
I am so glad and proud to be an AMERICAN!
This was after 9/11....
I told several there,
'Ich bin ein Amerikaner!'
(I am an American) It felt good and the response was great from the Germans! Alot of shaking hands, questions in broken english (mainly about 'football' [soccer]) and pats on the back. I wore my Ohio State stuff.
Seeing the American flag on our Delta 767 airplane, sitting in Munich's airport, was heart warming. I choked back the tears. A fellow American at the airport approched me and asked how the Buckeyes were doing...He's been in Germany over a month and lost contact.
Before I end this, I want to thank my cousin, Chris Muncy and my uncle, Jeff Dixon for giving me insights and tips prior to the trip, and thanks to my aunt Eleanor Skowronski and cousin Allen Casavant for meeting us in Atlanta, Georgia and treating us to GOOD American food!
Love you all so much!!!!

WOW wonder what I was up to in 2003, I vaguely recall mom mentioning her and Allen going to meet you at the airport but don't think she went into why or how it went. Wish I had not been so busy with my life at the time to go, I am sure I had a good reason but I have no clue now (2014), LOL I never made it to Germany, I had a chance once but circumstances made it not a good idea to go so I managed to get out of it. Think I probably would not have cared for the local foods myself, though I wonder if they have great sausages as in the US and OZ it seems that sausages and kraut are common for celebrating Octoberfests. I am so happy you got a chance to get out of the US everyone should get that opportunity at least once in their lifetime.
