Description:
I got this picture from Ted Walter (Author of the “The Hayes Family” book) at the Hayes Reunion August 1, 2009 in Paintsville, KY. He had copied it from the original that is owned by Larry Hayes of near Charley, KY.

This picture was taken about 1913 and the people on the porch are Grandma Sarah’s cousins; Goldie Hayes, baby Otto Hayes, and husband Roscoe Hayes (ancestors of Larry). Written on the back of the original of this picture is: (I forgot the exact wording but something like) “This home was moved here for Joe Cyrus to replace his home that had burned to the ground, same location”.

The story is that Joe’s home burned down and John Hayes had his crew (including Joe) clean up the site and moved this cabin to the same site in one day. John Hayes was Grandma Sarah’s uncle and according to Larry Hayes, Joe worked for John Hayes as a share cropper.

The “site” is on Ramey Branch just outside of the community of Charley, KY.

Has any one heard of the Cyrus home burning down?

Anyone know a time frame of when Joe (and Sarah?) would have lived here?

Wonder how far it had to be moved? What a sight that must have been.

Jeff there is a Girl standing on the far right when you click on the picture she comes in better I wonder who she is? Do you know where Charley actually is located? My dad was born in Charley and I would like to try to find out where it is. I am just so thankful for the fact that you have gotton so much info from our family heritage to share with us. It really helps let us know how things make a family stronger from our roots. Thanks again for all you do on getting this information. Love ya Deb

Deb, Ted Walter and I saw the girl also, we plan to ask Larry Hayes if he might be able to identify her.
I went to Charley and to Ramey Branch after I saw the picture to get an idea of where Joe may have lived. Directions: go about 12 to 15 miles south of Louisa on US23, turn right on 1760, Charley is about 2 1/4 miles at a fork in the road. You can find it by going to www.googlemaps.com and enter 'charley ky 41232'. If you zoom in you can see Ramey Branch.

Jeff, We can always depend on you to keep 'Up the Search for the Truth'! There are many mysteries in this photo.
My grandmother- Verlina Adeline Hay Cyrus- was born in this same area.
In the HAYES FAMILY book that you are referring to on the bottom of page 324 - there is an error.... Mary Jane was a Hays before marring Martin Alexander Hay!
The lady on the side of the photo almost looks like Aunt Olva... isn't that weird? However it was taken 4 years before she was born... But the resemblance is amazing. I am going to try to reach someone on that side of my family to verify any of this for you. Of course I will be back with you. In 2006 when Ron & I traveled to Louisa in our RV we came the southern way- through Mazie or was it Mattie..anyway.... I don't remember Charley... I do remember the bad roads, as it was right after the area had floods! Not an AAA approved highway for sure. Especially in an RV towing a little car.

SINCE WE ARE ALL LISTED IN THIS BOOK---- It seems my grandfathers side of the family are all entertwined with my grandmothers side! Do I want to know the truth? Saundra

Saundra, I will see Ted Walters in a couple of weeks at a monument dedication to my Great-great-grandfather Henry Dixon. (Henry founded Paintsville Ky.) I will give Ted your update. Ted is planing to revise the Hayes Book, but not in the near future (he is currently working on a Wheeler book).
To be clear, Mary Jane was a HAYS, not HAY nor HAYES. Do you know if she is related to Grandma Sarah's HAYES (some of them spelled it HAYS)?
